Prensa Latina: Temporary Closure of Venezuelan Oil Plant

The joint venture Petrocedeño, which has a majority of Venezuelan stocks, scheduled the temporary closure of a plant for more than seven weeks, starting on February 25, official sources said.

A communiqué from the state-owned company Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) noted that the temporary closure of the plant is aimed at carrying out maintenance, cleaning, inspection, repairing and modification works.

The press release added that the works would be done under strict security conditions and following international protection standards "to safeguard the integrity of people, facilities, neighboring communities and the environment."

Petrocedeño said more than 3,000 people will be hired to do the work and 800 for supervision, so it asked nearby towns for cooperation o choose the personnel.

The French oil company Total, and Norway's StatoilHydro own stocks in Petrocedeño, which was nationalized as part of the Venezuelan government's policy to rescue the country's sovereignty over natural resources.
